Some Buick V6 Engine Builders Face Parts Challenges

July 28th, 2010 · No Comments · Auto Racing

Modern engine builders occasionally encounter problems ordering parts for engines which have been out of production for for a long time. These engine rebuilders must look for solutions to this problem in the aftermarket parts industry, and in some circumstances are not finding the needed parts. The engine parts availability issue has now spread, with lower domestic manufacturing, and is impacting Buick engine parts.

The 3.8L turbo Buick engine powered a select number of cars in the late eighties. However, many automotive enthusiasts recognize that this engine is what powered the Buick Grand National. Since GM quit producing this engine, their engine parts availability has been reduced. Many machine shops that rebuild these engines look to the aftermarket engine parts industry to supply them with the engine parts they need to build these engines.

Recently, a number of businesses have quit making important engine components such as connecting rods. This component shortage has opened up an opportunity for foreign manufacturers, that some in the USA attribute to further stressing the domestic manufacturing industry and driving others to close their doors.

The number of new 3.8L turbo Buick cylinder blocks is in limited supply and are hard to locate. There are some to be found, but very few businesses make them available for purchase. Because of this, the demand for good used cylinder blocks exists and thrives. In many situations these engine blocks may be machined to exact tolerances and used for performance turbo applications.

Even with the right parts, few machine shops have the experience building turbo Buick engines. Unlike other engines, there are performance tweaks which can be made that will improve horsepower and durability. While using the services of a specialized engine rebuilder can be more costly initially, they typically have the experience to produce a turbo Buick V6 engine which is built to last.

At the present time, there are aftermarket engine parts available for the turbo Buick engine. These parts have been tested and have performed well under extreme racing conditions. In fact, these engines could still give any modern day engine a good run for its money.

Sean is an engine rebuilder with Weber Power Products. This business retails turbo Buick engine parts and offers automotive machine shop services.
