In Victoria BC, whale watching is very popular with tourists as it offers such a unique opportunity. One doesn’t very often get the chance to commune with nature in such an intimate and up-close manner. Seeing the majestic creatures in their natural environment is a beautiful sight to behold-and an experience that is remembered long after travellers return home to their regular lives.
Orca Spirit gives Victoria whale watching tours, which are three hours in duration, and the ideal months for sighting are April through October. The spring and fall tours run twice a day, 9am and 1pm, and the summer tours depart three times a day: 9am, 1pm, and 5pm. If you book in advance, additional tour times may be requested, and large bookings can be accommodated with flexible departure times. The tours have a high success rate of 95% for orca sightings. There are three resident pods in the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits, which equals a total of roughly one hundred whales, so sightings are frequent.
Harbour porpoise, Dalls porpoise, Harbour and Elephant seals, otters, and marine birds are also often spotted on tours. There is a chance of seeing Humpback, Gray, and Minke whales as well. All in all, there are many great sights to take in–from the oceanic wildlife to the gorgeous seascape.
Orca Spirit presents you with two choices of vessels: a zodiac or a larger covered boat (both have onboard washrooms). The open zodiac offers adventure and thrills as the wind whips through your hair, and the covered boat has luxurious indoor seating, comfort, and a liquor license! The covered boat is recommended for those who have bad necks or backs, pregnant women, and anyone whose health is generally frail. Kids under the age of six are only allowed on the covered boat.
Another booking option is custom charters for larger groups. The vessel options are as follows: 12-person zodiacs, which are zippy little boats that offer an exhilarating ride; The Pacific Explorer, a 70-passenger boat with all the amenities; the company’s signature vessel, The Orca Spirit, a 45-passenger fleet, which was designed to maximize the comfort and safety of passengers while whale watching; and coming soon, watch for The Orca Spirit II, a 168 passenger catamaran, offering the ultimate in luxury!
If you will be visiting British Columbia, you would be remiss not to go Victoria BC whale watching! whale watching is a magical experience that you will hold in memory in years to come. The opportunity to see majestic creatures in their natural environment can’t be missed!
