One of the biggest guys in college sports a year ago, Terrence Cody, at 6 foot four in. tall and 350 pounds, has altered the way that colleges look at larger players. A great run stopper can make a world of difference for football clubs desperate to free up their linebackers.
It’s my opinion that increasingly more we will have enormous men, just like Terrence Cody, arriving onto the scene in college football. A huge guy at that size in the middle of the defense actively playing nosetackle or middle guard is a very precious tool.
Now don’t misunderstand me, folks the size of Terrence Cody with his quickness don’t come around every day. The NFL football team, the Baltimore Ravens saw wonderful potential in this big man’s physical abilities, size, and speed enough to draft him at number 57 in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft.
It’s not merely size which makes the big difference in a lad like this,it is also the quickness. The rapid first step from the line, when coupled with the power of the bodyweight, it is pure physics of mass times acceleration equals momentum… and momentum he does have!
The Baltimore Ravens saw a crucial drop-off in it’s run defense the very first time this past year, 2009. Running back Cedric Benson of the Cincinnati Bengals rushed for the first hundred yard performance against the heralded Ravens defense in over 39 games. Part of the reason is the light middle of the defensive front line. In 2010,Raven’s coaches recognized that they needed the big man up the middle of their defense to free things up and so they drafted big “Mount Cody”.
Look for big things (no pun intended) out of Mount Cody in the NFL, as well as some other massive guys doing more in college football. Recruiting will heat up for these kinds of players because it proved successful for the Alabama Crimson Tide in capturing a 2009 national championship.
So the next time you think of excellent defense, see if you’re able to locate a nearby mountain and take a look at it. Your chosen college football team will almost certainly be hunting for the same thing but only a bit more human!
