How To Paint Your Personality Onto Your Hockey Helmet

September 1st, 2010 · No Comments · Hockey

The hockey helmet is certainly an iconic piece of gear, whether on the roller rink or ice rink. It offers great protection to your head by gripping your head, specifically the occipital protuberance. The right sizing is therefore very important so that your head will be effectively protected from injuries.

Most hockey players will agree with me that protection is only half its use. What is the other half you ask? Well, an equally important use of the helmet is as a canvas to express every hockey player’s unique personality and artistic expression. That’s right, hockey isn’t just rough bumps and checks for tough guys. Art can also be utilized here to help you project the kind of player you want others to see.

Unfortunately, a good number of hockey helmets come in standard colors and designs. A dull appearance can definitely be seen when you buy one at the Sports Shop. You can change this dullness by just repainting it! In painting, you get to create your own design and pick out the colors you want. Go for brightcolors to set you away from the pack. Go for warm colors to convey intensity and passion. Make the logos of champion teams embedded on your helmet to give you that champion confidence. The possibilities are endless, you need only create your own design.

In this project you will use can/s of spray paint, clear coat spray paint, masking tape, cardboard and scissors, fine grit sandpaper, industrial strength adhesive, plus a screwdriver and the design for your hockey helmet.

First, unscrew the visor or cage and remove the chin strap. Also remove the interior pads. Feel the surface of your helmet for any scratches or bumps, and smoothen it using sandpaper. Spray on the clear coat afterwards and let dry. This readies your helmet for painting.

Step 2 involves cutting out shapes needed in your design from the cardboard. Tape them securely onto your hockey helmet so that the areas which are not supposed to be sprayed on by a particular color will be protected. Use a single color at a time, working your way from the base colors up. Allow drying in between each spray painting.

3. Spray on the clear coat on the whole outer surface of the helmet and allow to completely dry.
