The MMA Workout Mat: Piecing The Puzzle Together

June 4th, 2010 · No Comments · Martial Arts

The concept of using mats has been a popular concept in martial arts for many years.

The reason is clear, since the sport has existed, no one wants to get hurt. The new rage in martial arts may be a new one but martial artist of all styles have used mats from the start.

The classic model of puzzle mat is a must for anyone looking for protection from injuries in a MMA class setting or even in a personal workout.

To ensure you will prevent unnecessary injuries and to be sure the floor on which you are training on is properly cushioned with a buffer that eliminates impact related injuries, using a mat is key.

Kinds Of Mats

Many different types of mats are made that can be placed on a floor.

Quite common are the rolled mats and folding mats. Puzzle mats may not be as popular as folding and rolled mats, but they are equally effective though you should make sure that you purchase it from a name brand manufacturer.

You certainly do not want to make a purchase from a less than reputable manufacturer because you will want to be sure that the mats are well made and will provide the proper amount of protection in any and all situations that can occur in MMA.

Protection

You must have adequate and effective protection when dealing with MMA.

Punching, kicking, clinching, throwing, takedowns and ground grappling are all situations you will encounter in MMA training sessions.

Without a proper mat, the potential for injuries are greatly increased. With a good mat on the floor, you will reduce the risk for problems.

You can never eliminate such potential problems completely but, you can reduce the risk and drastically cut the chances down.

Drills

MMA is a tough sport and that is a fact. It requires a lot of drilling and sparring so you must have the proper floor mat in place for sure.

Ease

Puzzle mats are very simple to put together because, like the name implies, they fit together like puzzle pieces. They can be easily assembled and disassembled as well.

You can leave the mat assembled and affixed to the floor if you want to, permanently. You can also undo them and store them away if you choose.

How Many Pieces Do You Need?

How many square footage you need for you mat in order to properly grapple on it is a very common question.

The number of people who will be grappling on the mat is one factor to consider.

For those who are running a large class with a number of people, you probably would want the bulk of the floor covered with mats. Ideally, there should be no space – or as little space as possible – that is not covered by the puzzle mat(s).

If you are going to have small grappling sessions, however, a 12×12 mat space very well may be enough. If that seems too small, you can just add to it as needed. It is better to have too much than too little when it comes to mat space.

Purchasing

Be sure to choose a reputable manufacturer who’s products are of good quality when it is time to purchase a mat. MMA websites often have reviews available and detailed information on the puzzle mats. You can often order straight from the site.

It is a definite that you need a mat to workout on, the only thing is question is which mat you feel will work best for you. If you like the concept of being able to add to and take away from your mat space and the idea of being able to easily store it, the puzzle mat just might be the one for you.
