Getting The Right Attire For Skiing

October 24th, 2010 · No Comments · Skiing

Skiing is a popular past time – especially on winter holidays – but it can be daunting to know what equipment and clothing to buy for the first time. Ski clothing tends to be split into three layers. When preparing your upper body, you should begin with a thermal body shirt which will help transfer moisture from your body to the next layer of clothing – a fleece jacket or sweater. This will do the majority of the work in keeping you warm and will also offer added protection.

You’ll find it very difficult to ski without your legs, so make sure they are adequately protected too. Thermal trousers are a necessity. Like the thermal body shirt on your upper body, these will keep you warm and dry. On top of your thermal trousers, you should wear padded ski trousers. These will keep you warm and dry and offer another layer of padded protection in case of falls or accidents. Both layers are absolutely essential to having proper protection and coverage.

It’s a well known fact that your body’s extremities get coldest first. For that reason, you must ensure that your feet are adequately protected against the elements. A good quality pair of skiing or snowboarding socks will offer thick protection against the cold and harsh impacts and are vital for any skier. Ski boots should be worn on top. Always opt for specialist boots which are designed to be connected to high quality ski bindings as these are what keep you attached to your skis.

To finish off the look, you should wear a ski hat or helmet for added warmth and protection. If you are a newer skier, be sure to wear a helmet. Ski goggles will protect your eyes from the sun and flying snow and ice and a ski jacket will give you an extra waterproof layer on top. Buy a high quality pair of ski bindings to attach your boots to your skis and ensure your hands are protected with a good pair of ski gloves.

Of course, once you’ve got yourself kitted out you’re going to need a pair of skis. You’ll need to do your research on the different types of skis as well as the various materials and styles. Your skis must be matched to your skill level and ensure your skis are designed for the surface and climate you’ll be skiing on. If you’re going to be taking part in specialized skiing – downhill or telemark, for example, you’ll need specialized skis.
