Learning To Ski Before Hitting The Slopes

November 17th, 2010 · No Comments · Skiing

Learning how to ski requires practice on the actual slopes – but before you get that far, knowing what kind of equipment and clothing you’ll need and a little bit about the sport will save you time and money. A visit to a professional ski shop for outfitting is a good idea. There you can get a lot of information about clothing and gear, plus you can even try them on.

Some big city ski outfitters actually have small “snowy” slopes and you can take your first ski lesson there. This is very helpful for beginners, especially kids. Kids will have an easier rime learning to ski there and you will save time on layering ski outfits because you’ll have help available.

Beginners should choose his first mountain with care. You should get one that offers ski lessons for beginners and bunny slopes. Know how to get on and off a chairlift before you go to your first lesson because that’s one of the things you’ll be doing first.

One important lesson you need to remember about getting on a chairlift is to be sure you have all the necessary equipment (plus a lift ticket) with you. It’s as simple as lowering yourself onto the chair, and using your spare hand to balance. As you go on up the mountain on your chairlift, point your skis upward.

There are three classes of skiers you’ll need to know about as you improve and want to try more difficult slopes – Beginner, Intermediate and Expert. How fast you progress depends on how much practice you get and how often you can make it to the slopes. Beginners are those that are first-timers or those who can’t ski on slopes yet.

As a beginner, you’ll be learning many new moves, including making a turn with your skis parallel. You’ll start with easy runs and later progress to the more advance ones. This is when you become an intermediate skier.

Expert skiers can take steep slopes and very advanced runs. When you progress to Expert level, you’re ready to learn advanced skiing tricks such as a mid-air split in which you turn at the same time.

You just can’t get enough if skiing whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or expert. When you learn how to ski, you’ll have developed a life-long skill that can open the fun of the great outdoors and also become more in touch with your body and what heights you’re capable of reaching.
