Look Into Dog Swimming Pools

July 19th, 2010 · No Comments · Swimming

We all like to cool off in the water in the summertime. This includes our pets. Most dogs like swimming and splashing in the water. It is great exercise and most dogs love to play in it. It cools them down much like it cools humans down. Dog swimming pools are a great way to provide a safe environment for them to do so.

A child’s pool is not suitable for your dog. It is like buying a human Frisbee for them they are both made of hard plastic. The hard plastic of the pool can become damaged by your dogs teeth or claws. This presents a dangerous situation on a couple of levels. First the pool would be destroyed. The sharp edges of plastic could cut your dog causing sores or infection.

If your dog happens to swallow a piece of the plastic and that can be extremely dangerous. Plastic can not be digested and can cause a blockage in your dogs stomach. Blockages kill thousands of dogs every year. Anything made for human children is not durable enough for dogs particularly the larger breeds.

Adult human pools are just as dangerous for our canine friends. Most adult pools have concentrations of chlorine that can hurt a dog if too much is ingested. Chlorine is a poison to humans and dogs a like. Even if your dog does not drink the pool water the chlorine can damage their skin.

Lakes and ponds are also unsuitable for your dog to swim in on a regular basis. This water can contain harmful infectious bacteria. Many skin conditions, illnesses, and other conditions are caused by exposure to this bacteria. This makes lakes and ponds unsuitable for dogs to swim in regularly.

Also stagnant water can contain mosquito larvae which when they turn into adult mosquitoes. These can carry a deadly worm called heartworm. Although sometimes treatable the treatment for heartworms is extremely expensive. If left untreated heartworms are almost always fatal to a dog. A dog can be infected at anytime if they are not on a preventative and are exposed.

If you purchase and maintain a small pool just for your dog you can avoid all of these things. Pools meant for dogs are made to stand up to even the toughest dog and simple maintenance can keep it from getting stagnant. They come in all shapes and sizes and dog swimming pools are meant for dogs.
